Roboexotica: Interactive Sound Meets Cocktail Culture

In our final semester of the year, we worked on a really exciting and challenging project for the Roboexotica Exhibition in Vienna, an event known for its creative, tech-infused take on cocktail culture.

This was definitely one of the most intense and stressful times during my studies, but in the end, it turned out to be one of the most rewarding as well. Our project combined interaction design and coding and pushed us to our limits - in the best way possible ;).

We created an interactive sound-mixing experience using a custom-built touch table. Users could place up to four uniquely shaped wooden blocks onto the table to mix different musical layers and create their own soundscape - all while staying in the playful, experimental spirit of Roboexotica.

The technical part, especially the coding, was quite demanding for me. But with the help and support of our professors at FH Joanneum, we were able to overcome the challenges and bring the concept to life. Their guidance was key and I’m incredibly grateful for that.

One of my personal highlights was seeing visitors immediately understand how to interact with the table and genuinely enjoy it. Watching people experiment, have fun and even dance a little was the best kind of feedback we could’ve asked for.

This project reminded me how much I love combining design, code and interaction — and how powerful tangible interfaces can be when done right.
