Overview
This project focused on redesigning the app for Kaoo Riverside, a conveyor-belt sushi restaurant with an à la carte twist. The original app had many usability issues: cluttered screens, confusing order limits and a lack of transparency when it came to prices and ingredients.
We set out to streamline the user journey, solve key pain points and create a modern and intuitive interface for the customers.
Process
Research & Discovery
We started by conducting a heuristic evaluation of the existing app and visited several running sushi restaurants (including Kaoo) to better understand the context, flow and user behavior.
We also created:
- User personas to define our target groups
 - Empathy maps and user scenarios to guide design decisions
 - A list of key usability issues to address in our redesign

Main Pain Points Identified
- Overcrowded and visually inconsistent UI
 - Lack of clear allergen or ingredient information
 - Confusing à la carte vs. running sushi logic
 - No personalization or user profile features
 - No real-time feedback on order limits or spending

Design Goals
Our goal was to make the app:
- Visually cleaner and easier to navigate
 - Clearer about dish content (ingredients, allergens, etc.)
 - More informative and transparent about pricing and availability
 - Personalized with user accounts, order history and favorites
 - Fun and fresh, to match the dining experience

Design & Prototyping
We designed a clean and modern interface in Figma, using a flexible layout system and playful yet elegant visuals. Key features included:
- A new home screen with daily highlights
 - A redesigned menu system with filters and clear icons
 - An improved ordering process with visual feedback and smart restrictions
 - Profile features for saving preferences and checking past orders

We built a high-fidelity prototype and tested it with users to gather feedback, which we incorporated into the final version.
Final Thoughts
This project was a great combination of UX research and design. We didn’t just redesign an interface, we tried to rethink the entire experience of this restaurant's concept.
As team lead, I learned a lot about guiding a design process from start to finish, balancing collaboration with creative direction and advocating for users every step of the way.
